Will Belarus participate in construction of pipe-line “Odessa-Brody”?

Neighbours of Belarus are planning to stretch the Ukrainian pipe-line “Odessa-Brody” to Poland. The issue will be discussed at an international conference in Vilnius in October. At the same time representatives of the Belarusian government are conducting negotiations about delivery of Caspian oil in Kiev. The Lithuanian Ministry of Economy, representatives of this country and representatives of Poland, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Georgia have informed that they are going to sign an agreement on cooperation in the project of stretching the Ukrainian pipe-line to Poland on October 10 and 11.

The project provides for construction of a 250-kilometre pipe-line that will connect Odessa-Brody and the Polish Adamava at another branch of “Druzhba”. The pipe-line goes to Plotsk and Hdansk oil-processing plants from there.

If the project is realized, the pipe-line will connect the Caspian and Black Sea regions with the Baltic Region and will become a new way of oil transit to Europe.

A Russian edition “Kommersant” considers the project to be political and doubts it will be realized soon.

Let us note that the information about the Belarusian government planning to pump oil from the Caspian Sea through Ukraine appeared the other day. Belarusian-Ukrainian negotiations concerning the issue took place in Kiev. The variant of using the pipe-line “Odessa-Brody” was also discussed there.

Ukraine is ready to provide technical facilities for Caspian oil delivery and putting it into tank-wagons.

Let us remind you that, according to the energy safety concept, Belarus is to organize alternative oil supplies though ports of the Baltic and Black Seas till 2010.
