100 parishioners pray for return of St. Joseph Cathedral in Minsk
Up to 100 people prayed in the evening of April 14 for the return of St. Joseph Cathedral in Minsk. The people were holding candles, reading prayers and singing religious anthems. The flags with the image of the God's Mother were waving over the crowd.
It has been one year since believers and democracy activists began a campaign against the destruction of St Joseph Cathedral and for the return of the church to the Roman Catholic Church.
The building hosted a militaray commandant's office for a long time. The government wanted to refurnish it into a hotel with a swimming pool and a bowling center. Thanks to the efforts from the civic activists, the building has not been destroyed. However, the cathedral has not been returned to believers. The church belonged to the Roman Catholic Church until 1863, when an anti-Russian uprising was brutally supressed, reports jeans-by.com.
