12:03 New criminal case against oppositionist Klimov

A prosecutor's office in Belarus has opened a criminal case against the members of the 13th Supreme Council and former businessman Andrej Klimov on charges of slandering Aliaksandr Lukashenka. The case is based on a story published by Klimov on the web-site of the United Civil Party. In his story, Klimov alleged that Lukashenka should be personally associated with the disappearances and the killings of several leaders of the Belarusian opposition. It is not the first time when Andrej Klimov is charged with slandering the head of the state.

A similar case was opened in 2005, but later dismissed from court for further investigation. Klimov was shortly tried and sentenced to exile for staging a street rally on March 25, 2005. The politician walked free in December 2006, reports Charter'97.
