12:50 Pipeline project to bypass Belarus sent for revision
The Russian government has sent for revision a blueprint of the pipeline project to bypass the territory of Belarus. The project has been drafted by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Energy. The pipeline projected capacity is to reach 50 million tons per year, and the pipeline would streach out for 1000 km.
In January 2007, the project was widely seen in the context of the Belarus-Russia oil row. But the Russian Ministry of Industry and Energy now reasons that building such a pipeline route is simply necessary in order to ease tension on the main oil pipeline network.
However, experts maintain it makes no sense to build a new pipe just to create a backup network system, as it would significantly spur up the growth of prices for oil, reports Vremya Novostey.
