About 3000 people repressed in Belarus – Ihar Rynkevich

About three thousand people were repressed in Belarus in the past decade. A human rights defender Ihar Rynkevich, member of the steering committee on creation of a civil commission on vindication of victims of political repressions has informed about it.
In an interview given to ERB Rynkevich stressed that is was a preliminary number:

“We consider the referendum in 1996 as the reference point. Much more than a thousand people were repressed only during the presidential campaign in 2006”.

However, repressions existed before 1996 so the list may grow a lot.

According to Rynkevich, people who had administrative and criminal cases started against them for their ideas and those who were dismissed or expelled from universities “for politics” were also included in the data base of the repressed.

People will be able to get vindication next year. They will even be able to demand compensation for moral damage.

A “grey book” is also planned to be created. Those who took part in the repressions of citizens will be listed there.

“We want to oppose to these repressions because they have not stopped. The conveyor of trials and detentions continues its work”, - said the human rights defender in his interview given to the European Radio for Belarus.
