Archive to return St Joseph's Cathedral in exchange for building from city hall
Archivists are prepared to return the building of St Joseph Cathedral which now accommodates the Belarusian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation and the Belarusian State Archive of Literature and Arts, Uladzimir Adamushka, Director of the Archive Department at the Ministry of Justice, said in a statement. In exchange, the archivists want to get a 6000 sq. m. building suitable for archives from the city authorities. According to Adamushka, a new building is expected to be constructed specially for archives in the future. However, it costs a lot of money which the department does not have.
The government has begun the reconstruction of the building of the National History Archive in Hrodna. The project costs Br 8 billion and three years of work. Archives are also reconstructed in Maladzechna, Barysau and Brest.
Since March 19, 2005, members of St Joseph's Roman Catholic parish in Minsk have staged daily vigils in front of the cathedral building, praying for the return of the 17th-century cathedral to believers.
