Belarus is among European countries having most prisoners
There are 462 prisoners for 100 thousand people in Belarus. So our country is among the states having most prisoners in Europe. The information has been provided by the International Centre on Prisons Study created by London King’s College. The first place is taken by Russia – 623 people. Some other post-Soviet countries got in the top 10.
The analysis of post-Soviet prisons discovered overpopulation, bad sanitary conditions, insufficient safety including physical violation and sexual harassment.
European countries in the top 10 (after Russia and Belarus) are Ukraine (345), Estonia (333), Latvia (292), Moldova (247), Georgia (276), Poland (239), Lithuania (235) and Azerbaijan (202). Iceland occupies the last position on the list – 37 people.
The world survey showed that USA was the country with most prisoners (more than 700) and Australia had only 11 (the last position on the list).
