Belarus Association of Journalists marks World Press Freedom Day
The World Press Freedom Day is marked on May 3. This date was picked in honor of the fact that on May 3, 1991 representatives of the independent press from across Africa gathered in the capital of Namibia and passed a resolution, calling on the governments around the world to ensure press freedom.
In Belarus, local journalists have operated in an extremely unfavorable environment for many years, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) has reminded in its address to mark the World Press Freedom Day. At the same time, in these conditions the most important thing is that the independent journalism has survived as an institution of the society in Belarus.
The human rights organization Freedom House put Belarus on the 189th position in the list where it analyzed the press freedom across the world.
To mark the event, BAJ will today hand out prizes to the winners of the Free Word journalism contest.
