Belarus to envisage transition period for new spelling rules
A transition period will be envisaged after the new rules of the Belarusian language spelling and punctuation are soon to be approved by the parliament, Uladzimir Zdanovich, the chairman of the Education, Culture Science and Technical Progress Committee at the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus told Zviazda newspaper. During the transition period, citizens and government agencies would be able to use both the existing language standards and the new rules.
In the view of Uladzimir Zdanovich, the transition period would take 3-4 years' "5 years the most".
The transition period regulations are to be discussed on Thursday July 26 during the meeting of a working group from the parliamentary commission that is developing the draft legislation.
Uladzimir Zdanovich said that apart from lawmakers the representatives from the Ministry of Education and the National Academy of Sciences would attend the meeting.
