Belarus gets 28 times less EU assistance than Ukraine

The European Commission today is expected to publish officially the new proposals to Belarus regarding the cooperation in the framework of Neighborhood Policy. The proposals were put forward but Poland and Sweden. The neighborhood policy envisages the development of contacts both the cultural and political levels.
Technical assistance is also offered. For instance, Ukraine receives Euro 140 million from the European Union annually.

Belarus was to receive only Euro 20 million from 2007 to 2010. In the same period of time, Ukraine will have received Euro 560 million of technical assistance. The small amount for Belarus is explained by the fact that this country does not meet full the conditions in the framework of the neighborhood policy.

However, since a dialogue between Belarus and the West has recently gained a new momentum, it should not be ruled out that the amount of the technical assistance to Belarus could be significantly raised in today's proposals.
