Belarus to join 'space club' in 2009
Belarus is set to join the club of space exploring nations in 2009, Belarus PM Siarhei Sidorski said on January 23 in Minsk during a meeting to mark the 80th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
According to Sidorski, the launch of a remote Earth sounding system is one of Belarus' priority projects. Siarhei Sidorski also noted that Belarusian scientists were also tasked to take part in the construction of a nuclear power plant. "This project will make our economy more energy-efficient and less dependant. It will also allow us to implement several new technologies in the construction, hydrogen energy sector and other field", the Belarusian prime minister said.
He also stressed the importance of the further development of domestic microelectronics. In November 2008, the National Academy of Sciences and Philips signed a memorandum of understanding which envisages the implementation of a buisiness plan to produce LEDs and LED-based instruments", Sidorski said.
By 2010, new bio-energy technologies will have replaced over 8 percent of diesel and at least 12 percent of petrol fuel and have saved up to 6 percent of the total energy consumed in this country.
