Belarus lawmakers to discuss invitation of MEPs for local polls

Belarusian lawmakers will discuss if members of the European Parliament could take part in monitoring the upcoming regional polls in Belarus, MP Sergei Maskevich told the official news agency Belta. Euroradio reported earlier that MEPs recently expressed desire to send a delegation to Belarus to observe the elections that will take place on April 25.

Maskevich stressed that now Belarus does not have a practice of inviting foreign observers to local polls. Therefore, lawmakers will discuss if a precedent should be created.

When asked if there are political hurdles to invite European lawmakers as observers for the local elections, Maskevich said: "What kind of political hurdles can we talk about? We will weigh all "pro" and "con", but we will also take into account a political aspect".
