Belarus marks World AIDS Day

On December 1, Belarus joins the whole world to mark the World AIDS Day. The Palace of the Republic will today host a charity concert titled "Give Your Promise in the Fight Against AIDS", with popular bands and artistes to participate. Night clubs in Minsk will stage an action titled "Love is a Basis of Health". Visitors will be able to have express HIV tests. The Reactor night club will host a festival of alternative music titled "Musicians Against AIDS". The function will start at 17:30. More events will be organized in Brest, Homel, Hrodna, Vitsebsk, Mahilyow, Svetlahorsk (Homel region) and other cities across the country.

According to the latest reports of the Belarusian healthcare authorities, 9,423 HIV positive patients were registered as of November 1, including 686 cases since early 2008. The Homel region is taking the lead with 4,937 cases, followed by Minsk (1,324) and the Minsk region (1,197).

Women account for 35.9 percent of all HIV positive patients against 64.1 percent of men. 69.8 percent of the HIV positive in Belarus are young men between 15 and 29 years old, reports Belapan
