Belarus not to raise import duties for cars: customs chief

There are no plans to raise import duties for foreign-made cars, Belarus's Customs Committee Chairman Aliaksandr Shpileuski said in a statement. He stressed that the measure had not even preliminary discussed. In the view of Shpileuski, such a decision would "not be logical". Moreover, "this should not be done".

“We have no domestic production of cars, so we have to give an opportunity to the population to purchase a car in the conditions of competition", the official news agency BELTA quotes the Belarus's customs chief as saying.

In late November, Belarus's Deputy Industry Minister Valyantsin Hurynovich stated that Belarus was set to raise import duties for foregin-made cars and that the proposal was under study.
