Belarus officials hold closed-door consultations in Riga over nuclear power plant
Consultations on a nuclear power plant were held in Riga at the initiative of a Belarusian official delegation but with the representatives of the public, reports Belapan. Initially, Latvia's Environmental Protection Ministry planned to hold public consultations. However, Alexander Andreeyeu, the head of state expertise department at the Belarusian Ministry for Natural Resources, demanded that consultations be held only with Latvian officials. He was supported by other members of the Belarusian delegation. The demand was voiced immediately after envronmentalists Tatsiana Novikova and Andrei Azharovsky entered the room.
The consultations took place behind the closed doors from 1100 to 1200. Afterwards, the press and NGO representatives were allowed into theroom. .
The Latvian side officially received for consideration the conclusions of the Public Environmental Expertise of the Belarusian nuclear station which contains negative evaluation of this nuclear project.
