Belarus pilot to remain in Bangkok prison for at least 12 days
The crew of Il-76 cargo plans that was arrested for carrying weapons in Thailand last Saturday will be impounded for at least 12 days, according to Bangkok's criminal court ruling, reports the Russian news agency Ria Novosti.
The captain -- Belarus national Mikhail Petukhov -- was on Sunday interrogated for six hours by the Thai police.
His statement was that the plane took off from Ukraine and loaded weapons in North Korea. It was supposed to return back to Ukraine. Petukhov insists the crea had no idea about the military nature of the cargo.
The plane was arrested on December 12 after it landed in Bangkok for refuelling. Apparently, US security services tipped the Thai police which eventually found grenade launchers and components for surface-to-air weapons, a total of 40 tons.
The crew is facing charges of illegal transportation of weapons.
