Belarus police monitors 1500 "computer genuises"
1500 "computer genuises" are tracked by the Inteior Ministry of Belarus. The police believe that these Belarus citizens can use their knowledge for committing a crime. Statistics show that IT-related crimes are usually committed by young people aged 18-30. There is also one case when a 14-year-old programmer from Belarus hacked the web site of a foreign financial company and used his perfect English to blackmail, demanding money for not disclosing the stolen information.
The Belarusian newspaper Zvyzda writes that cyber crimes are on the rise in Belarus. 135 IT-related crimes were registered in 2004; 178 in in 2005; 272 in 2006; and 899 in 2007.
