Belarus to step up customs control

The Belarusian customs will reinforce controls over the movement of goods for personal use through the customs border effective from May 15.

A source at the State Customs Committee told the Russian news agency Interfax that necessary instructions had already been circulated across the country's customs posts. The government says it needs to control people's personal belongings, because Belarusians often use them to disguise large shipments of smuggled goods".

People who live next to the border can travel abroad several times a day and "bring 30-35 kg of cargo".

The State Customs Committee promised to give more details at a news conference in Minsk on Tuesday.
