Belarusian Council of Intellectuals stands for strict sanctions
The civil initiative "Belarusian Council of Intellectuals" has stood for introduction of strict sanctions against the Belarusian authorities, on December 24. According to the Chairman of the Council Uladzimir Kolas, the society should do its best to achieve release of the victims of repressions, which occurred on December 19. He said it was necessary to create an international commission for investigation of the crimes committed during and after the presidential election, and also to conduct new fair election under the international control.
The movie director Jury Khashchavatski stated that the Belarusian authorities' instruments are creating the fear in the society and taking innocent hostages for political trade. According to him, the most effective way in the struggle for release of the victims of repressions is the economic blockade of the regime.
The poet Henadz Buraukin is convinced that apart from the sanctions, the Council should demand immediate detecting and detention of the provocators, as well as investigation of their crimes.
The philologist and translator Liavon Barshcheuski thinks that all sanctions against the Belarusian authorities from the side of Russia and the West are justified in order to release all the victims of repressions.
The physicist and art critic Jury Khadyka underlined that the presidential candidates had been beaten and detained before the election results were declared, while the riot police had made no attempts to detain the provocators during the events at Independence Square in Minsk on December 19.
The poet Anatol Viartsinski quoted Article 21 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights: The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
The opinions of the Council members will be declared in the common statement in the near future.
