Belarusian Pro-Independence Bloc calls to support activist Aleh Surhan
The Belarusian Pro-Independence Bloc (BNB) has appealed to the civil society and the people of Belarus to support Aleh Surhan, an activist with the Young Belarus movement and a member of the committee that is organizing the Belarusian Christian Democracy party. BNB has called on members of the public to arrive at 1430 on February 15 to Vitsebsk's Kastrychnitski District court. Surhan is facing charges of disobeying the orders of police officers on September 3, 2009 during his arrest for hanging a white-red-white glag on the building of the Vitsebsk State Medical University.
According to Aleh Surhan, officers were beating him when at a police station. He also said that the initial protocol of charges for hanging the flag was misplaced and replaced with another one which said that Surhan was found drunk in a public location and was cursing at police officers. The activist is facing up to 6 years in prison, if convicted.
