Belavezhskaya Pushcha national park expands reserve territories
Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park will expand by a half the territiories where any economic activities are baned to cover a total of 75,000 hectars. The list of new additions includes a unique swamp (only three swamps of this kind in the world). Scientests underline that the swamp is over 6000-year-old and is associated with the Black and Baltic Sea basins, simultaneously.
The swamp, named Wild, covers the territory of 140 sq. km. It is home to almost all the plants that were entered into the Red Book of Belarus as well as extremely rare bird species.
After the expansion, the administration of the national forest reserve plans to approach UNESCO, seeking to include the territories in the World's Heritage List. This status would boost fund-raising opportunities for Belarusian scientists to do research and maintain this primeaval forest reserve.
