Blogger Lipkovich withdraws from local election campaign (video)
Famous blogger Yauhen Lipkovich told Belapan that he is withdrawing from the election campaign for a seat in the Minsk City Council. Lipkovich was gathering signatures to become a candidate in Minsk's Valhahradskaya constituency No 54. He said his campaign was an experiment. The blogger wanted to check the level of influence of the internet on the country. From July 1, 2010 the internet will be subjected to a more stringent regulation by the government under the presidential decree No 60.
Lipkovich noted that his nomination group of 10 people was staffed through the internet. However, only three out of 153 confirmed signatures of citizens were collected with the help of the web. In the view of the blogger, the internet and social networks in Belarus has no influence.
During his campaign, Lipkovich vowed to preserve the Sevastopalski Park in Minsk. He says there are real investors who eye to develop this lucrative space in the Belarusian capital. He also says other candidates will deal with the preservation of the park.
