BRUY throws potatoes and works “in contact” before elections
Opposition parties are trying to decide whether they should participate in the elections till the end or support the idea of a boycott. At the same time, official associations have already decided everything. As ERB has found out, the Belarusian Republican Union of Youth is organizing a republican marathon “Youth and elections – formula of responsibility”. The programme of the action includes a flashmob, contests in throwing potatoes and agitation on the Internet. The Central Committee of the BRUY claims that the association does not have any strategy for the election campaign. For example, the head of the department for relations with mass media Yauhen Halin does not know about it.
Halin: “There is no common centre so I cannot tell you about any details”.
The official website of the BRUY also contains no information about the participation of the organization in the coming elections. However, ERB has found out that the association is organizing a republican campaign. It is a republican marathon “Youth and elections – formula of responsibility”. The main goal of the action is attracting young people to polling stations. Instructions have been distributed all over the republic – organization of local actions and distribution of badges, colorful leaflets, brochures and other promotional products.
Our Vitsebsk reporter Yadviha Stasheuskaya has found out that BRUY members can suggest rather unexpected ideas.
Stasheuskaya: “An action “Kill a vegetable in yourself!” is among the planned events. BRUY members will treat Minskers to cucumbers and tomatoes and offer them potatoes to throw at a model of a ballot box. Young people who will come to polling station with at least four friends will receive tickets to discos, concerts and games of the funny and smart club”.
Moreover, discos “Voting makes you cool!”, sports marathons “Precious Choice” and actions “Bring your friends to the elections” will take place in some districts of Vitsebsk Region. BRUY is also going to present tickets to cultural events to those who will bring friends to early elections.
Brest BRUY members are looking for new ways too. They are also going “to kill vegetables in themselves” and to work on the Internet in the popular website “in contact”. There will also be traditional events - conversations with university students. The topics will be “original” – “Why do I vote’ and “Youth’s voice in the future of Belarus”.
BRYU members have recalled such actions as flashmobs in Hrodna. They will try to organize them every week. However, the content of the actions is kept a secret.
AnERB reporter Ivan Yurashchyk has found out that BRYU members from central Belarus consider the election campaign a routine. They will take part in the agitation campaign of authorities’ candidates in Lyahavichy District and observe the elections. Agitation BRYU groups will be created in Nyasvizh to engage young people in the elections and explain them who to vote for and how.
Ivan Yurashchyk: “Baranavichy BRYU is going to observe the elections although, according to official structures, there are no BRYU representatives in election commissions. By the way, there are no representatives of “Belaya Rus” either”.
