Canada condemns repressions against Belarusian opposition
Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon has made a statement in which he declared concern about the destiny of Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu and other detained opposition activists, informs Radio Liberty. The Minister said he had authorised the Charge D'Affaires of Canada to Belarus to convey their "deep disappointment" with the situation in Belarus to the Belarusian government. The Minister declared his concern about the destinies of the detained opposition activists, including Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, whose condition was still unknown.
“Canada clearly stated that it condemned the repressions against the demonstrants, in particular, beating and detention of numerous opposition leaders. We now see the step backwards, and I insist on calling for the Belarusian authorities to change their direction and start standing for democratic principles, respect for human rights and supremacy of law. People of Belarus deserve to be heard without a threat to be violently punished,” – said in the statement.
This is not the first statement of Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs after the presidential election in Belarus on December 19.
