Cold weather forecast leads city to turn on heat

The Minsk city government has decided to turn on the heat for all apartments within the next five days, citing a cold weather forecast, an executive with the Minsktseplasetka company told Euroradio.

Most apartments in Minsk are hooked up to the city's centralized heating system. Authorities have avoided turning on the heat because of a rule that requires outside temperatures to remain below 8 degrees Celsius for more than five days in a row.

On October 20, the heating will be turned on in dormitories, hotels, and culture and sports facilities.

"Every housing maintenance enterprise will turn on the heat in 20 percent of apartment houses per day. It depends on an enterprise's schedule which houses will be heated earlier or later," the executive said.

To find out when the heat will be turned on in every particular house, tenants would need to call the housing maintenance enterprise in the area.
