Containers filled with red phosphorus come off rails in Orsha

The accident took place on the evening of June 21. Containers filled with red phosphorus came off the rails at Orsha-Central station. Several tons of the dangerous freight fell on the ground.
The consequences of the disaster were liquidated quite quickly – it took several hours to do it. A lot of workers were engaged in the collection of the red phosphorus – rescuers, railwaymen, policemen and the emergency committee. The containers were lifted and the freight car that was damaged during the accident was isolated.

According to “Yezhednevnik”, if the concourse of circumstances had been worse, Orsha and the neighbouring territories could have been announced a 20-km area of chemical contamination. A state of emergency would have been announced in the regional centre if it had been rainy or windy.

Orsha Transport Office of Public Prosecutor is conducting a preliminary investigation.
