Early presidential election starts in Georgia
An early presidential election started in Georgia on Saturday. Besides it, Georgian citizens are asked to answer two questions: “Do you wish Georgia to join NATO?” and “Would you like parliamentary elections to take place in the spring of 2008?”.
More than a thousand international observers including about 40 non-governmental organizations and 161 mass media watch the election. Cameras will be installed at all polling stations in 10 big cities: one camera will be placed near the registration table and the other – near the ballot boxes.
The presidential election in Georgia will be valid despite of the turn-out. It is necessary to get 50% plus one vote out of the number of people who take part in the election in order to win. If none of the candidates wins, a runoff will be organized in two weeks, on January 19.
