Entrepreneurs on strike in Minsk
Entrepreneurs working at the major trade centers in Minsk today are on strike, a vendor from the Parking trade complex told the European Radio for Belarus. Entrepreneurs have also staged a spontaneous rally near the Parking center in the center of Minsk. Vendors from the remote market places have joned the protest. City officials are at the site trying to negotiate with the strikers.
Entrepreneurs protest against a president's decree that bans them from hiring other people than family members or relatives as their employees, effective from January 1, 2008. The decree also restricts the number of employees to three persons.
The strike is being supported by 30,000 entrepreneurs from Slutsk, Svetlahorsk, Baranavichy, Slonim, Recytsa, Salihorsk, Pinsk, Babruisk, Vitsebsk, Pruzhany, Uzda and Barysau.
