EPP urges EU to accept Belarusian students
The Chairman of the European People's Party (EPP) Wilfred Martens urged the universities of the European countries to accept Belarusian students in case they are expelled from the higher educational establishments for participation in the opposition demonstrations. He stated that upon the results of his meeting with the leader of the movement "For Freedom!" Aliaksandr Milinkevich on January 11 in Brussels, informs the party's press-center, reports BelaPAN. "I support the initiative of the Polish and Lithuanian universities to open their doors to the Belarusian students [participants of the opposition demonstrations] in case of their expel and appelal to all the universities of the EU countries to join it. I also appeal to the European Commission to assist in this issue", — said Martens.
The EPP leader said that if Europe wants to see democracy in Belarus someday in the future, it is to support the country's civil society with all the efforts.
Martens informed that he had discussed the Belarusian situation, as well as EU's possible reaction to it, with Milinkevich. "The horrible incidents which took place last month reminded Europe that the Belarusian government is really an outcast, which totally disrespects democratic values and supremacy of law", — said Martens.
EPP is one of the biggest pan-European political party. It unites dozens of parties from 39 countries and makes the biggest fraction in the European Parliament.
