EU Commissioner to meet Lukashenka, opposition in Minsk
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, EU Commissioner for External Relations and Neighborhood Police, is expected to arrive in Minsk in the evening of March 11. Tomorrow, she will begin an official visit to Belarus.
This is the second visit of a high-ranking EU official to our country over the past month and in the past ten days. On February 19, Minsk was visited by Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief. Benita Ferrero-Waldner is scheduled to meet with Alexander Lukashenka, foreign ministry officials, representatives of the opposition, civil society figures and journalists, according to kp.by.
The EU Commissioner said in an interview with Reuters yesterday that Belarus should make more political reforms before the European Union could agree to closer ties. She stressed that our country "has a chance to become closer to Europe", in particular, to be covered by EU's Eastern Partnership program. She described the current situation in Belarus as "two steps ahead, one step backward".
