European bank approves new strategy for Belarus
The Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has passed a new strategy for Belarus for three years.
The bank is expected to expand its operations in this country on condition that the Belarus authorities will implement reforms in order to develop market economy in concrete fields.
Just like in the previous strategies, the development of the private sector -- political democracy and market economy -- will remain the bank's priority.
Limited cooperation with the state-owned enterprises is also planned on condition that they will operate on commercial principles and comply with the bank's lending criteria.
The bank will primarily fund projects associated with the improvement of energy-efficiency and the development of new sustainable energy resources. It will also render assistance to upgrade environmental infrustructure and municipal services.
