European Coalition to field about 70 candidates
The
European Coalition plans to field about 70 candidates for this fall's
parliamentary election. Several candidates from the coalition will try to
register for the race in nine districts. However, Mikola Statkevich, a leader
of the European Coalition, says that the authorities would prevent pro-EU
advocates from winning a single parliamentary seat.
"No
one will get elected. But we field candidates to conduct an effective campaign
for Belarus' integration
into Europe. Firstly, it increases chances of
authorities registering at least one candidate. Secondly, more volunteers will
take part in the campaign. The third reason, we will have more resources,"
Statkevich told ERB.
The
government will give $800 to every registered candidate and offer radio and television
spots and newspaper space for their campaign ads.
