European Commission: Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan postpones their membership in WTO
The creation of the Customs Union will postpone the membership of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in the World Trade Organization for several years. The head of the representative office of the European Commission in Russia Marc Franco has claimed it in an interview with “Moscow’s Echo” radio station. According to the European official, another scenario was planned. Russia was supposed to join the WTO followed by Khazakstan and Belarus. Then the Customs Union had to be created. The decision to create the Customs Union first postponed the countries’ membership in the WTO for several years either separately or together, reports UNIAN quoting him.
Marc Franco noted that it was difficult for him to understand the logic of the decision taken by the administrations of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Let us remind you that the Prime Ministers of the three states claimed that they would like to join the World Trade Organization as a single Customs Union on June 9. Nevertheless, the countries did not stop their personal negotiations about joining the WTO. The Russian President Dmitry Medvedev claimed that the country would join the WTO easier on its own and that it would be more realistic on July 10.
