Expert: Belarus hardly to recognise independence of Abkhazia

Belarus will hardly recognise the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia at the session of the lower house of the Belarusian parliament on April, Ruslan Kharabua, an expert from the Moscow-based Institute for CIS Countries' Caucasus department said in an interview with Materik analytical portal. Commenting on the recent meeting between Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenka and Abkhazian president Sergei Bagapsh in Sochi, the political analyst noted political issues were on the meeting's agenda. Lukashenka and Bagapsh discussed economic cooperation only, because of Lukashenka's initiative, reckons Ruslan Kharabua.

In the view of the expert, the House of Representatives of Belarus can postpone the issue of recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia for a later date, after Belarus can be accepted into EU's Eastern Partnership program.

"I think that this issue requires Lukashenka's serious consideration. Obviously, this issue does not deal with the relations between Belarus and Abkhazia only. It also matters Belarus' ties with the European Union and Russia", noted Ruslan Kharabua.
