Expert: Rise in gas prices will not affect Belarus

Economist Pavel Daneika remains sceptical over the statement of Russian ambassador in Minsk Alexander Surikov who said on June 9 that Belarus could be charged up to $200 per 1000 cubic meters of Russian gas.  Daneika has reminded that the growth of gas prices is regulated by relevant bilateral agreements. He believes that the prices simply can't soar up to $200. Afterall, even this hike can't affect the Belarusian economy, he says.

Daneika: "It will not affect us just like the previous rise in gas prices did not really affect our economy much. There will be more pressure on the currency exchange rate and the government will have to take pro-active measure in order to hold it. There will be a slight inclrease in the cost price of commodities... At large, economy will cope with it".
