Foreign ministry asks Thailand to free Belarus pilot
Belarus' foreign ministry on January 19 sent a note to Thailand's foreign ministry, asking to release Belarus national Mikhail Petukhov, reports BELTA. The Belarusian is a crew member from the Il-76 cargo plane that was impounded by the Thai police in December 2009 in Bangkok after 35 tons of weapons were found aboard.
The police have dropped weapons possession charges against the pilots who have thus avoided death penalty. Under the current charges, they may face up to 10 years in prison.
