Former political prisoners from Akrestsina demand realization of legislation

A campaign aimed at creating normal conditions for prisoners serving their administrative sentence has started in Belarus. A group of representatives of democratic forces who were released the other day after having served their administrative sentence in a Minsk confinement cell in Akrestsina Street initiated it.
The leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka has informed ERB that appeals to the Attorney General and the Minister of Internal Affaires will be sent one of these days.

The Office of Public Prosecutor and Minister Navumau who personally detained participants of the recent entrepreneurs’ protest action are suggested to provide for realization of the legislation in Akrestsina and in other confinement cells.

Lyabedzka and a group of other “political” prisoners sent an appeal to the administration of the confinement cell while serving their sentence. They demanded normal living conditions for the detained: a library, dish-washing, cells for non-smokers, etc.

However, the campaign is not supposed to end with appeals to officials. Anatol Lyabedzka says:

“We will fight to make them perform some actions. I do not exclude the possibility of organization of some street actions. However, the former and the latter are aimed at drawing attention to the problems of those who get imprisoned in the main political prison of Belarus – Akrestsina”.
