Former Russian PM Viktor Chernomyrdin dies at 72

The special representative of the Russian President for the issues of economic cooperation with the CIS country members Viktor Chernomyrdin has died at the age of 72. 

Chernomyrdin died at 4 a.m. today in Moscow. As it was informed by the circle of his close relatives, he had been severely ill recently. 

Chernomyrdin was the Prime Minister of Russia since December 1992 till March 1998, then he was Russia's Amabassador to Ukraine from 2001 till 2009. His most recent position was the one of a special representative of the Russian President for the issues of economic cooperation with the country members of the Commonwealth of Independent States. 

Chernomyrdin was in pain beacuse of his wife's death. She died this March after a long-lasting illness. They lived together for nearly 50 years and brought up 2 sons, who gave them 4 grandchildren, reports RIA Novosti.

Chernomyrdin made himself memorable in Belarus in November 1996, when he persuaded the then Supreme Council Speaker Siamion Sharetski not to complete the President's impeachment procedure.
