Former spy, made-mad from Belarus detained in Ukraine
A gangster who formerly served in the Belarusian secret services was arrested at a train stations in the Ukrainian city of Korasten. The operation was carried out jointly by the Ukrainian and Belarusian law-enforcement agencies. A Ukrainian police spokeswoman Volga Nomerchuk told the European Radio for Belarus as follows:
"This man, 45 is a former agent of Belarusian special services. He was wanted by the Belarusian police through the Interpol channels since September 2007. When still in service, he organized a criminal gang that kidnapped people for ransom".
According to Volga Nomerchuk, the man was sentenced in Belarus to 9 years in prison but was released three years later under amnesty. He also conned Br 1 billion from one of the Belarusian state-owned enterprises. He was later hiding in Russia where he got possession of $200,000 from a private company.
The Belarusian police learned about his plans to travel to Western Europe through Ukraine's Zhitomir region where he had been expected by Ukrainian operatives. Given that the Belarusian was trained as a martial arts expert, police commandos were used during the operation.
The extradiction matters are currently being resolved.
