Freedom Day detainees to stand trials today

The participants of street celebrations in Minsk yesterday to mark the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian People's Republic are expected today to stand trials in local courts. Interior Minister Uladzimir Navumau said around 80 people were detained by the riot police. Human rights groups report about over 100 detained activists.
Siamyon Pechanko, a reporter with Nasha Niva newspaper who was detained while on editorial assignment, said all the detainees were charged with violating the procedures for the organization of public events. The police also took finger prints from all the detainees.

On March 25, the police used violence to disperse a peaceful demonstration to mark the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian People's Republic also known as the Freedom Day. The list of detainees also includes several journalists.
