Government to build coal thermal power plant in Zelva
Coal thermal power plant, mentioned so often in Brest two years ago, will be built in Zelva, Aliaksandr Karaba, head of energy department at Brest regional adnibistration, told the European Radio for Belarus: Karaba: We are 99 percent sure that it will noy be constructed here in Brest. Decision was made to build a coal station in the Hrodna region. Talks are under way to build a gas thermal power plant in our regio. It will be constructed by Italians.
According to Karaba, Italians are expected to submit design materials by late January. They will construct two power plants in the Brest region: in Brest and Belaazyorsk.
When asked if Belarus should go on with the project to build a nuclear power plant, Karaba answered as follows:
We depend on gas too much. This is very dangerous. If we run across any disagreements with Russia, they might close the tap… Russia does not take anyone into account, so let us have a coal station as well. When we build a nuclear power plant, we will be able to keep some stations in reserve just to be on the safe side.
