Great Britain ratifies Lisbon Agreement

The British Lords Chamber has ratified the Lisbon Agreement. It happened regardless of the fact that the basic document meant to change the EU Constitution that has not been approved yet was not supported by Irish citizens during a referendum. The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown stressed that all 27 EU member states had to ratify the agreement before it came into power.

"We respect (the decision of) the Irish people but we also have to respect other countries that discuss the agreement and ratify it”, - claimed the Prime Minister.

Leaders of EU governments and member states will try to find a way out of another political crisis at a summit in Brussels. “Interfax” reports that they will try to persuade the Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen into reconsidering the vote.

All the other countries except Ireland have to ratify the Lisbon Agreement in their national Parliaments. It has already been ratified by 19 EU member states.
