Human rights activists approve Yauhen Yakavenka’s amnesty
Human rights activists approve Yauhen Yakavenka’s amnesty and demand guarantees for him, reports Radio Liberty. A prisoner of conscience Yakavenka has been amnestied. He was sentenced to 1 year of custodial restraint for “draft evasion”.
Yakavenka’s release is a positive step, however, there is no alternative service in Belarus. It means he can be drafted again. Experts of the Amnesty International think that the authorities should provide Yauhen Yakavenka’s right to refuse from military service so that he would not be punished for his views again.
