Humanitarian aid, worth $6mn, stolen in Belarus

The Department of Humanitarian Assistance at the Office of the President has become the center of a large-scale embezzlement scandal.  The Minsk City Police Department has opened several crimincal cases associated with corruption and economic crimes, after millions of dollars were stolen from foreign donors who provided grants for the implementation of humanitarian programs through the department.

According to Ezhednevnik newspaper, the details of the scandal are not revelaed, also because it could demage the image of this country in the eyes of international partners.

Mikalai Alisiyevich, the head of the department for humanitarian activities, is the main suspect in the case. He was recently dismissed from this position. Apart from Alisiyevich, several local businessmen are facing criminal prosecution.

As far as back in 2004, this group developed a smart way of stealing at least $6 million of humanitarian aid.
