Interior, State Control Committee in conflict of interest over entrepreneurs' case

The Hrodna regional branch of the State Control Committee has finished the investigation of the criminal case against a group of businessmen led by the son-in-law of Maj-Gen Ivan Syarhei, Commandant of the Police Academy of Belarus. Zyanon Lomats, the chairman of the State Control Committee, has this case under his personal control.
According to the investigative e-newspaper Ezhednevnik, the case was opened early this year. During searches, financial fraud inspectors sezied the property worth over $500,000. The general's son-in-law eventually ended up behind bars. He is charged with illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion and embezzlement through office abuse.

The criminal acts have allegedly taken place on the territories of the Hrodna and Brest regions over the past two years. The group, comprising four people, used the fake credentials of business companies to offer repair and construction services to local enterprises.

The criminal case has been filed with court. If convicted, the son-in-law of the Police Academy Commandant could get up to 12 years in prison. The newspaper notes that this case has become yet another conflict of interest betweem two law-enforcement agencies: Interior Ministry and State Control Committee.
