Javier Solana to meet officials, opposition in Minsk
Javier Solana, EU High Commissioner for Foreign Policy and Security, on February 18 arrived in Minsk on an official visit.
This is the first visit of such a high-ranking EU official to Belarus. Solana is today scheduled to meet Alexander Lukashenka, Belarus's Foreign Minister Siarhei Martynau, the leaders of opposition parties, including Alexander Milinkevich, the leader of For Freedom movement, and representatives of the civil society, in particular Zhanna Litvina, the chairperson of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
Solana told reporters ahead of the visit that he was heading to Minsk in order "to declare EU's interest in developing relations with Belarus". He also noted that the Belarusian authorities had taken "important decisions, but those decisions should be accompanied by responsibility in all the fields".
