Kastusyou: Council of Intellectuals not serious about 'single candidate'
The Council of Intellectuals is unable to pick the single candidate, because it cannot work in an organized way, Ryhor Kastusyou, a potential candidate from the Belarusian Popular Front party, told Euroradio. He said he had taken part in four meetings of the Council to discuss the 'single candidate' from the opposition. Although he supports the idea of the 'single candidate', he was disappointed by how the Council worked.
Kastusyou: "I am a punctual man. I would come for those meetings 5-10 minutes before, even when I had to travel from Shklou or Mahilyou. But the meetings would be delayed for one hour. Some meetings would even be called off, because nobody could open the door, while organizers were late for the meeting. Actually, I don't really like this kind of approach".
Besides, the principle of signing a declaration of candidates was unclear, according to Kastusyou. The document was signed by the candidates and even by people who did not announce their presidential ambitions, e.g.: Syarhei Kalyakin, Alyaksandr Yarashuk, Anatol Lyabedzka, Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu.
Kastusyou: "If an organization or a man is organizing a group of people (in this case, contenders) -- but it is properly organized itself, this organization can't pretend to implement a very big and important cause. First, they should get organized themselves before influencing on others.
The Council of Intellectual is scheduled to meet in the evening of August 3. According to the statement of Uladzimir Kolas, Council's head, this may be the last meeting on the 'single candidate', because the candidates do not wish to refuse from their ambitions for the sake of the common cause.
