KGB arrests Lithuanian businessman

Belarus's domestic security service KGB has arrested Gintas Zegeris, a Lithuanian citizen doing business in Belarus, on suspicion of acting as a middleman for a bribe. The Lithuanian businessman and his Belarusian partner Mikhail Shavelzon were detainen on June 3, but official charges are yet to be brought.

Lithuanian diplomats in Minsk can visit Zegeris only after he officially approaches the Lithuanian embassy, seeking assistance. Gintas Zegeris has worked in Minsk for over 10 years. He has a Belarus resident permit. Lithuanian ambassador in Minsk Edminas Bagdonas said Zegeris had not contacted the embassy.

In January 2008, Belarus arrested Alvodas Jablonskis, another Lithuanian businessman. He was charged with forging customs documents. He remains in a Belarus custody, reports the Agency of Financial News (AFN).
