Kyrgyzstan residents approve new Constitution

The population of Kyrgyzstan on Sunday approved the country's new Constitution at a national referendum. No incidents or violence were reported during the polls. According to Kyrgyzstan's interim government, 65 percent or nearly 1.7 million voters turned out at polling stations. "We reckon the referendum was legitimate", Kyrgyz Prime Minister Roza Otunbayeva said in a statement. "Now there will be a normal legitimate government, not an interim government in Kyrgyzstan".

Under the new Constitution, Kyrgyzstan becomes a parliamentary republic. Parliamentary elections will take place on October 10. A new president will be elected on the same day reports InterRight news agency.
