Latvia not to extradite Belarusian Yury Brytvich

Latvia will not extradite a Belarusian Yury Brytvich accused of buying, storing and transporting drugs in his motherland.
The decision was taken by the country’s cabinet. The 26-year-old Brytvich was detained last September at the check-point “Zilupe”.

He sent an appeal and claimed that the criminal case started against him in Belarus was trumped-up and asked Latvian authorities for “an alternative status or the status of refugee”. The Belarusian said he was being persecuted for his political activities.

The General Office of Public Prosecutor of Latvia decided that Yury Brytvich could be extradited to Belarus in November 2006.

But the Council on citizenship and migration decided to give him an alternative status for a year in April. The Belarusian was allowed sojournment in Latvia.
